Carson was a dream baby for his newborn session. Truly the perfect newborn photography subject. He arrived, had a nice full feeding, and fell promptly and deeply asleep just like you hope every newborn will for their portrait session. So he gets full credit for being an easy baby.
Buuuut… he’s also a perfect example of everything that can go awry in a newborn session. In our first attempt a few days prior, I worked with him and his awesome parents for around five hours, and accomplished approximately one shot per hour. The poor little man had been tongue-tied at birth, and was struggling to latch. It’s a lot to learn when you’ve spent your whole life in utero swallowing a different way! He’d eat for 45 minutes, then go into a light snooze long enough for one pose, then wake right back up and want to eat again as soon as he was touched. We finally called it so that he could get some uninterrupted sleep (baby’s comfort and safety is always first priority when shooting newborns), and got back together a few days later when he was almost twice as old. And like I said… total dream baby.
I share this not to out sweet Carson, but for the sake of any new parents-to-be out there who are worried or stressed about what happens if your baby’s having a rough day on picture day. To them, I’d say: don’t sweat it! A professional photographer will work with you to get the images you dream of and keep your baby safe and happy.
